BREAKING NEW GROUND
Breaking New Ground (BNG) envisions new witnessing communities emerging in fresh contexts. We are committed to thriving on new ground by offering grants, training, and resources to movements that have a vision and a plan for pioneering ministry.
“Pioneering work has always been a part of the DNA of IFES. Through BNG we are prioritizing projects that arise from the grass roots, support student initiative, and start work in a new location. We’re looking for creative, sustainable proposals that will have the capacity to multiply impact moving forward”.

ENGAGING THE UNIVERSITY
Engaging the University (ETU) recognises that national movements thrive in their incarnational, integrated, and intellectually credible Christian witness in the academic world. We provide resources and equip students and faculty members to holistically engage the university.

Engaging the University Coordinator: Timothée Joset
As part of ETU, the Logos and Cosmos Initiative (LCI) provides training, mentoring and funding for our participants, known as “Catalysts”, to lead theology and the sciences projects in collaboration with their IFES national movements. From 2020 – 2025 (August), the Logos and Cosmos Initiative was funded by the John Templeton Foundation and was active in Latin America and Francophone Africa.
The LCI is now continuing in these regions under regional IFES leadership and has been launched in East Asia too. Other regions in IFES are also exploring starting this ministry.

GRADUATE IMPACT
Graduate Impact stands alongside national movements that are preparing students for life after university and supporting graduates in their witness to Jesus in professional life. Initially serving movements in Europe and Eurasia, the reach of this ministry has in recent years expanded to other regions.
Programs include:
- Transition. A nine-part e-course to help graduating students prepare to live for Jesus in the working world.
- Cross-Current. A modular discipleship program for young Christian adults to learn to think, live, and speak distinctively for Jesus at work.
- Bible and Culture. Learn with other believers how God’s Word speaks with clarity and relevance to the big issues of our time via a modular summer school (with optional academic credit).

GOVERNANCE DEVELOPMENT
The Governance Development program promotes well-governed, effectively structured, and God-focused national movements. We encourage boards to be faithful, high-performing stewards of student ministry and foster good governance culture and practice throughout IFES.
Throughout the year, the team offers face-to-face visits and online training sessions for your board. E-courses are also available for single boards and global cohorts and include:
- Caring for your General Secretary
- Evaluating your National Board
- Developing a Strategic Plan
- Passing the Torch (transition and succession)
- Vision, Mission and Core Values
A compendium on effective and Bible-based governance is also available in Good and Faithful: Growing in the Art of Governance, Reflective Devotionals for Board Members, edited by previous Governance Development program leader, Mirek Pieszka. It can be ordered through IFES and is free to all IFES national boards (with postage costs based on number of copies and shipping destination).

INDIGENOUS SUPPORT DEVELOPMENT
Indigenous Support Development (ISD) helps national movements reveal opportunities for developing local ministry partnerships – this may be through prayer, resources, personnel, and finance. By mentoring students, graduates, staff, and board members, we help them build sustainable networks for resource mobilisation. We celebrate the potential for everyone to thrive in God’s work.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENT MINISTRY
The IFES International Student Ministry (ISM) team supports national movements as they live out the gospel to and with international students. We help discern needs, share best practices and resources, and foster interaction between regions.

SCRIPTURE ENGAGEMENT
Engaging with Scripture is all about meeting the Lord who speaks to us through the Word. It allows us to develop in how we love, study, live, and share our faith. By sharing and developing contextual, collaborative, and creative approaches, the Scripture Engagement team seeks to show how the Word is wholly relevant to our lived experiences.
