Ces personnes sont aujourd\u2019hui, plusieurs d\u00e9cennies plus tard, des dipl\u00f4m\u00e9s actifs au service de Christ. J\u2019ai eu ce genre d\u2019exp\u00e9rience il y a quelques semaines de cela alors que je lisais la liste des contributeurs au Commentaire biblique latino-am\u00e9ricain que mon ancien coll\u00e8gue Ren\u00e9 Padilla \u00e9dite. Certains des noms des auteurs m\u2019ont rappel\u00e9 le temps o\u00f9 ils \u00e9taient \u00e9tudiants dans les ann\u00e9es 60\u00a0; ils avaient d\u00e9couvert la joie d\u2019\u00e9tudier les \u00c9critures en utilisant l\u2019approche inductive \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9tude biblique. Ils ont aussi d\u00e9velopp\u00e9 un go\u00fbt pour les bons expos\u00e9s bibliques dans la tradition classique de l\u2019IFES.<\/p>\n<p>C\u2019\u00e9tait dans les ann\u00e9es 60 qu\u2019en tant qu\u2019\u00e9quipier de l\u2019IFES, nous sommes venus \u00e0 apprendre cette v\u00e9rit\u00e9 selon laquelle la Bible doit \u00eatre toujours comprise en contexte.<a href=\"#_ftn1\">[1]<\/a> J\u2019entends par l\u00e0 que les questions que nous posions \u00e0 partir de la Parole de Dieu \u00e9taient des questions qui nous sont venues des \u00e9tudiants de cette g\u00e9n\u00e9ration, lesquels nous avons servis. Dans les ann\u00e9es 60, la culture latino-am\u00e9ricaine \u00e0 laquelle nous \u00e9tions confront\u00e9s \u00e9tait influenc\u00e9e \u00e0 divers degr\u00e9s par les penseurs occidentaux que Jacques Ellul a d\u00e9crit comme \u00ab\u00a0les ma\u00eetres de la suspicion\u00a0\u00bb, \u00e0 savoir Marx, Freud et Nietzsche. Mais en raison de l\u2019impact de la r\u00e9volution cubaine qui a triomph\u00e9 en 1959, le plus influent a \u00e9t\u00e9 Marx. Ainsi, l\u2019\u00e9vang\u00e9lisation dans les universit\u00e9s devait r\u00e9pondre aux questions qui venaient du marxisme. Il y avait dans l\u2019atmosph\u00e8re intellectuelle un sentiment fort du sens de l\u2019histoire. Et c\u2019\u00e9tait marqu\u00e9 par des attentes utopiques concernant le socialisme comme \u00e9tant un style de vie. C\u2019\u00e9tait le but vers lequel la r\u00e9volution sociale devait conduire.<\/p>\n<p>C\u2019\u00e9tait la source des questions auxquelles nous, \u00e9vang\u00e9listes parmi les \u00e9tudiants, devions r\u00e9pondre en ces jours-l\u00e0. C\u2019\u00e9tait le contexte dans lequel nous devions lire et exposer notre texte.<\/p>\n<p>Des questions comme l\u2019oppression, la pauvret\u00e9, la lib\u00e9ration, la r\u00e9volution, les classes sociales et la r\u00e9forme agraire, \u00e9taient ce dont les \u00e9tudiants d\u00e9battaient en ces jours-l\u00e0. Nous \u00e9tions forc\u00e9s d\u2019aller dans les \u00c9critures pour trouver des questions non seulement pour r\u00e9pondre dans les groupes d\u2019\u00e9tude biblique mais \u00e9galement pour conseiller les \u00e9tudiants concernant leur vie et leurs attentes concernant leur carri\u00e8re. Les commentaires bibliques que nous avions en espagnol \u00e9taient des traductions d\u2019auteurs britanniques ou am\u00e9ricains pour qui le marxisme et ces questions n\u2019\u00e9taient pas des probl\u00e8mes. J\u2019ai d\u00e9couvert avec surprise que le seul dictionnaire biblique qui existait en espagnol, traduit d\u2019une \u00e9dition am\u00e9ricaine de 1890, n\u2019incluait pas des mots tels \u00ab\u00a0pauvret\u00e9\u00a0\u00bb ou \u00ab\u00a0oppression\u00a0\u00bb. Et la Bible avait tant \u00e0 dire sur ces questions\u00a0! Mais je me suis aussi r\u00e9joui lorsque le livre de E A Judges <em>The Social Pattern of Christian Groups in the First Century<\/em> a \u00e9t\u00e9 publi\u00e9 par InterVarsity Press en 1960. Et avec Ren\u00e9 Padilla, nous \u00e9tions reconnaissants lorsque la m\u00eame maison d\u2019\u00e9dition a inclus notre lecture contextuelle latino-am\u00e9ricaine des \u00c9critures dans le livre <em>Is Revolution Change?, <\/em>publi\u00e9 par Brian Griffiths in 1972. Le chapitre de Ren\u00e9 \u00e9tait \u00ab\u00a0r\u00e9volution et r\u00e9v\u00e9lation\u00a0\u00bb et le mien \u00e9tait \u00ab\u00a0l\u2019impact social de l\u2019\u00c9vangile.\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n<p>Le fruit de notre lecture contextuelle de la Bible \u00e9tait inclus dans des livres \u00e0 destination des \u00e9tudiants que nous avons publi\u00e9s. Pedro Arana du P\u00e9rou avait \u00e9t\u00e9 un responsable \u00e9tudiant actif. Une fois son dipl\u00f4me d\u2019ing\u00e9nieur en chimie en poche, il est devenu secr\u00e9taire itin\u00e9rant de l\u2019IFES au P\u00e9rou, au Venezuela, en \u00c9quateur et en Colombie. Il est all\u00e9 \u00e9tudier la th\u00e9ologie \u00e0 la <em>Free College<\/em> \u00e0 \u00c9dimbourg o\u00f9 il a eu l\u2019opportunit\u00e9 de r\u00e9viser le texte des conf\u00e9rences d\u2019\u00e9vang\u00e9lisation qu\u2019il avait pr\u00e9sent\u00e9 aux \u00e9tudiants dans ces pays dans les ann\u00e9es 60. L\u2019\u00e9diteur espagnol Jos\u00e9 Grau les a publi\u00e9es \u00e0 Barcelone en 1971, sous le titre <em>Progreso, t\u00e9cnica y hombre<\/em> (Progr\u00e8s, technique et homme).<a href=\"#_ftn1\">[1]<\/a> Avant cela, en 1967, Pedro a publi\u00e9 un ensemble de mes propres conf\u00e9rences d\u2019\u00e9vang\u00e9lisation sous le titre <em>Di\u00e1logo entre Cristo y Marx<\/em> (Un dialogue entre Christ et Marx).<a href=\"#_ftn2\">[2]<\/a> Ce livre a \u00e9t\u00e9 utilis\u00e9 comme outil d\u2019\u00e9vang\u00e9lisation dans les universit\u00e9s pendant le programme d\u2019\u00e9vang\u00e9lisation en profondeur au P\u00e9rou (1967). Dix mille exemplaires ont \u00e9t\u00e9 vendus cette ann\u00e9e-l\u00e0. Lorsque les r\u00e9gimes autoritaires ont \u00e9t\u00e9 \u00e9tablis apr\u00e8s les coups d\u2019\u00e9tat militaires en Argentine et au Chili, ce petit livre devait soit \u00eatre cach\u00e9 soit \u00eatre d\u00e9truit. Apr\u00e8s ses \u00e9tudes doctorales \u00e0 Manchester sous la direction de F F Bruce, notre coll\u00e8gue de l\u2019IFES, Ren\u00e9 Padilla a contribu\u00e9 \u00e0 deux chapitres de ce livre <em>\u00bfQui\u00e9n es Cristo hoy?<\/em> (Qui est Christ aujourd\u2019hui\u00a0?), un autre livre d\u2019\u00e9vang\u00e9lisation qui devait \u00eatre r\u00e9imprim\u00e9.<a href=\"#_ftn3\">[3]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Ren\u00e9 Padilla et moi avions commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 d\u00e9velopper une \u00e9bauche christologique qui nous permettrait ensuite de b\u00e2tir une \u00e9thique sociale chr\u00e9tienne en utilisant l\u2019incarnation, la croix et la r\u00e9surrection comme cadre th\u00e9ologique de notre effort th\u00e9ologique contextuel. Tout en faisant mon travail doctoral en Espagne, j\u2019ai \u00e9t\u00e9 invit\u00e9 \u00e0 pr\u00e9senter un court papier lors du Congr\u00e8s mondial pour l\u2019\u00e9vang\u00e9lisation en 1966, convoqu\u00e9 par Billy Graham \u00e0 Berlin. Mon papier \u00e9tait parmi plusieurs papiers dans la section \u00ab\u00a0obstacles \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9vang\u00e9lisation\u00a0\u00bb. Et mon sujet sp\u00e9cifique concernait le totalitarisme comme \u00e9tant un obstacle. Tandis que mes trois autres coll\u00e8gues d\u2019autres parties du monde identifiaient le totalitarisme comme \u00e9tant le communisme, dans mon papier, j\u2019ai soulign\u00e9 le fait qu\u2019en Am\u00e9rique latine, c\u2019\u00e9tait le totalitarisme des militaires et des partis d\u2019extr\u00eame droite qui constituait un obstacle. De tous les expos\u00e9s bibliques de John Stott sur le grand mandat missionnaire dans les \u00e9vangiles, j\u2019ai \u00e9t\u00e9 particuli\u00e8rement touch\u00e9 par l\u2019expos\u00e9 sur Jean 20:19\u201323. Il a mis l\u2019accent sur le fait que dans cette courte version du grand mandat missionnaire, nous n\u2019avons pas seulement un commandement mais aussi un mod\u00e8le pour la mission. En venant d\u2019un contexte diff\u00e9rent, j\u2019ai trouv\u00e9 l\u00e0 quelques points avec lesquels Ren\u00e9 et moi-m\u00eame avions travaill\u00e9 en Am\u00e9rique latine. Encourag\u00e9 en cela et aussi dans mes conversations avec Stott, lorsque l\u2019on m\u2019a demand\u00e9 de pr\u00e9senter un papier au Congr\u00e8s sur l\u2019\u00e9vang\u00e9lisation \u00e0 Bogot\u00e1 en 1969, congr\u00e8s qui faisait suite au Congr\u00e8s de Berlin, mon papier a r\u00e9sum\u00e9 le travail qu\u2019avec Ren\u00e9, nous avions entrepris au cours de cette d\u00e9cennie.<a href=\"#_ftn4\">[4]<\/a> Se r\u00e9f\u00e9rant \u00e0 l\u2019accueil que ce papier a re\u00e7u, Ren\u00e9 Padilla a dit que cela \u00ab\u00a0mettait en \u00e9vidence le fait qu\u2019un secteur important du leadership \u00e9vang\u00e9lique en Am\u00e9rique latine \u00e9tait une terre fertile pour les questions sociales d\u2019un point de vue biblique.\u00a0\u00bb <a href=\"#_ftn5\">[5]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Dans les ann\u00e9es 70, les choses avaient commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 changer. Je me souviens encore de ma surprise lorsque j\u2019ai pr\u00e9sent\u00e9 une conf\u00e9rence d\u2019\u00e9vang\u00e9lisation \u00e0 l\u2019Universit\u00e9 autonome de Mexico en 1973. A l\u2019heure des questions, un des \u00e9tudiants a dit\u00a0: \u00ab\u00a0Ma g\u00e9n\u00e9ration ne s\u2019int\u00e9resse plus \u00e0 changer le monde en suivant les formules marxistes. Ce que nous voulons, c\u2019est prendre conscience du potentiel incroyable que nous, humains, avons en nous-m\u00eames. Qu\u2019est-ce que Christ a \u00e0 offrir en ce sens\u00a0?\u00a0\u00bb Alors que je commen\u00e7ais \u00e0 lui r\u00e9pondre, il a cit\u00e9 Carlos Casta\u00f1eda, qui \u00e9tait \u00e0 ce moment-l\u00e0 un best-seller. Cet anthropologue p\u00e9ruvien am\u00e9ricain popularisait les enseignements de \u00ab\u00a0Don Juan\u00a0\u00bb, un magicien natif am\u00e9ricain qui offrait une exp\u00e9rience religieuse mystique que beaucoup de jeunes exploraient en Californie et aussi en Am\u00e9rique latine. Nous devions donc revenir aux paroles de Christ en Jean 10:10 \u00ab\u00a0Moi, je suis venu pour les hommes aient la vie, la vie abondante.\u00a0\u00bb. Nous devions aussi revenir \u00e0 la lecture contextuelle des enseignements de J\u00e9sus et des proph\u00e8tes de l\u2019Ancien testament. Il est si critique d\u2019une exp\u00e9rience religieuse sans v\u00e9ritable foi et du genre de vie nouvelle que la foi en Christ apporte.<\/p>\n<p>Mon contexte en Espagne aujourd\u2019hui est \u00e0 nouveau diff\u00e9rent. La culture pr\u00e9sente des signes du d\u00e9clin de la chr\u00e9tient\u00e9 catholique romaine. Par exemple, parmi les jeunes de 18 \u00e0 29 ans, le pourcentage de ceux qui se disent catholiques pratiquants est pass\u00e9 de 15,2% en 2007 \u00e0 10,4% en 2009. Par ailleurs, 70% de ces jeunes disent qu\u2019ils prient \u00e0 un moment ou un autre de leur vie. La postmodernit\u00e9 marque l\u2019atmosph\u00e8re intellectuelle. Dans ce contexte, le GBU, le mouvement \u00e9tudiant de l\u2019IFES, a d\u00e9cid\u00e9 d\u2019utiliser une \u00e9dition sp\u00e9ciale illustr\u00e9e du livre d\u2019Eccl\u00e9siastes comme outil d\u2019\u00e9vang\u00e9lisation. Ils consid\u00e8rent qu\u2019ils ont r\u00e9ussi \u00e0 attirer les \u00e9tudiants aux \u00e9tudes bibliques sur cette base. Et certains sont venus \u00e0 la foi en Christ par le biais de cette portion des Ecritures.
