Ensemble, ils synth\u00e9tisent un th\u00e8me de la Bible qui est malheureusement souvent n\u00e9glig\u00e9 (la r\u00e9elle pr\u00e9occupation de Dieu pour les \u00e9trangers, les migrants, les r\u00e9fugi\u00e9s), ou alors spiritualis\u00e9 \u00e0 outrance (la vie chr\u00e9tienne est un p\u00e8lerinage spirituel sur des terres \u00e9trang\u00e8res, jusqu\u2019\u00e0 ce que nous atteignions tous une autre destination\u00a0: \u00ab\u00a0Ce monde n\u2019est pas ma demeure, je suis seulement de passage\u2026\u00a0\u00bb). Ainsi, alors que nous nous consid\u00e9rons comme des \u00e9trangers dans ce monde, nous n\u00e9gligeons les v\u00e9ritables \u00e9trangers que Dieu a plac\u00e9s parmi nous, dont il nous appelle \u00e0 prendre soin.<\/p>\n<p>Comme Heimburger le souligne, ces deux textes ne sont n\u00e9anmoins qu\u2019une fraction des arguments bibliques. Les Isra\u00e9lites n\u2019ont jamais oubli\u00e9 leurs origines en tant que nation d\u2019esclaves en fuite, leur vuln\u00e9rabilit\u00e9 dans le d\u00e9sert et donc, le statut de migrant de leurs anc\u00eatres. La liturgie de leur f\u00eate annuelle de la moisson commence par \u00ab\u00a0Mon anc\u00eatre \u00e9tait un Aram\u00e9en nomade\u2026\u00a0\u00bb (Deut 26.5). Ainsi, la forte exigence morale inscrite dans leur loi, consistant \u00e0 exercer la compassion et la justice envers les \u00e9trangers et les immigr\u00e9s, reposait sur une solide base historique et th\u00e9ologique. Ils devaient se comporter envers ces personnes comme Dieu s\u2019\u00e9tait lui-m\u00eame comport\u00e9 envers eux dans les m\u00eames circonstances, principe qui impr\u00e8gne l\u2019enseignement de J\u00e9sus et du Nouveau Testament \u00e0 bien des niveaux.<\/p>\n<p>La force de ce principe est refl\u00e9t\u00e9e dans le commandement \u00e0 aimer que l\u2019on trouve dans le Pentateuque. Lorsqu\u2019il a \u00e9t\u00e9 demand\u00e9 \u00e0 J\u00e9sus quel \u00e9tait le plus grand commandement de la loi, il en a cit\u00e9 deux\u00a0: aimer le Seigneur notre Dieu de tout notre c\u0153ur, de toute notre \u00e2me et de toute notre force (Deut 6.5), et aimer notre prochain comme nous-m\u00eames (L\u00e9v 19.18). Il s\u2019agit l\u00e0 de deux des quatre mentions de la forme verbale pr\u00e9cise <em>we\u2019\u0101habt\u0101 <\/em>\u00ab\u00a0et je vous demande d\u2019aimer\/et vous aimerez\/et vous devez aimer\u2026\u00a0\u00bb que l\u2019on trouve dans l\u2019Ancien Testament. Dans ces deux passages, les objets sont respectivement Dieu et le prochain. Mais cette forme verbale est \u00e9galement utilis\u00e9e deux autre fois, dans le Deut\u00e9ronome et dans le L\u00e9vitique, cette fois pour dire \u00ab\u00a0vous aimerez l\u2019\u00e9tranger\u00a0\u00bb (Deut 10.19, cit\u00e9 par Heimburger\u00a0; et L\u00e9v 19.34). En effet, L\u00e9vitique 19 fait un parall\u00e8le incontestablement d\u00e9lib\u00e9r\u00e9 entre le verset 18 (\u00ab\u00a0Tu aimeras ton prochain comme toi-m\u00eame\u00a0\u00bb) et le verset 34 (\u00ab\u00a0vous l\u2019aimerez [le<em> g\u0113r<\/em>] comme vous-m\u00eames\u00a0\u00bb). \u00c0 la lumi\u00e8re de tout cela, nous voyons que notre amour pour l\u2019\u00e9tranger\/le migrant est mis sur le m\u00eame plan que l\u2019amour pour notre prochain\u00a0; les deux sont consid\u00e9r\u00e9s (par J\u00e9sus ainsi que dans la loi de l\u2019Ancien Testament), comme une cons\u00e9quence et une condition essentielles de l\u2019amour que nous affirmons avoir pour Dieu.<\/p>\n<p>Mais lorsque nous appliquons ce langage biblique au probl\u00e8me qui se pose aujourd\u2019hui, nous sommes imm\u00e9diatement confront\u00e9s \u00e0 un v\u00e9ritable contraste en termes d\u2019\u00e9chelle. Il y a assur\u00e9ment une diff\u00e9rence entre \u00ab\u00a0l\u2019\u00e9tranger en s\u00e9jour parmi vous\u00a0\u00bb, c\u2019est-\u00e0-dire un nombre relativement restreint d\u2019\u00e9trangers qui r\u00e9sident pour diverses raisons au sein de la soci\u00e9t\u00e9 d\u2019Isra\u00ebl, et les millions de r\u00e9fugi\u00e9s et de migrants dans notre monde actuel. Davantage de r\u00e9fugi\u00e9s ont fui la d\u00e9vastation de la Syrie que la population totale de l\u2019Isra\u00ebl biblique. La question est la suivante\u00a0: cela nous d\u00e9gage-t-il de notre responsabilit\u00e9 ou cela ne fait-il que l\u2019amplifier, puisque le principe et le commandement qui y est associ\u00e9 n\u2019ont vraisemblablement pas chang\u00e9\u00a0?<\/p>\n<p>M\u00eame si nous optons pour la deuxi\u00e8me option (qu\u2019il nous incombe tout de m\u00eame d\u2019aimer l\u2019\u00e9tranger), les moyens qui nous permettent de le faire sont tr\u00e8s diff\u00e9rents de ceux dont disposait l\u2019Isra\u00ebl biblique, et ils s\u2019accompagnent de toutes sortes de complications politiques, \u00e9conomiques, juridiques et religieuses. Si les pays ont le droit de se prot\u00e9ger des invasions militaires ou de l\u2019imp\u00e9rialisme culturel et \u00e9conomique, ont-ils \u00e9galement le droit de contr\u00f4ler leurs fronti\u00e8res des vagues de r\u00e9fugi\u00e9s\u00a0? Mais quels sont les droits des r\u00e9fugi\u00e9s, si tous les territoires et tous les pays et, en d\u00e9finitive, la Terre enti\u00e8re appartiennent au Seigneur, lequel nous appelle \u00e0 prendre soin les uns des autres lorsque nous sommes dans le besoin, ind\u00e9pendamment des fronti\u00e8res\u00a0? La question est complexe et elle exige d\u2019\u00eatre consid\u00e9r\u00e9e avec la plus grande attention, mais nous ne pouvons pas nous contenter de mettre de c\u00f4t\u00e9 l\u2019enseignement biblique uniquement parce que le probl\u00e8me a aujourd\u2019hui une toute autre ampleur. Et des d\u00e9placements aussi massifs de r\u00e9fugi\u00e9s fuyant la guerre n\u2019\u00e9taient pas chose rare \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9poque de la Bible. Le petit livre souvent n\u00e9glig\u00e9 d\u2019Abdias est une ferme condamnation du peuple d\u2019Edom, qui traitait de mani\u00e8re cruelle et inhumaine les r\u00e9fugi\u00e9s de Juda fuyant la famine, la brutalit\u00e9 et la destruction inflig\u00e9es \u00e0 leur ville par les Babyloniens. Il est difficile de lire ce livre (ou de pr\u00eacher \u00e0 son sujet, comme j\u2019ai d\u00fb le faire \u00e0 l\u2019apog\u00e9e de la crise des r\u00e9fugi\u00e9s en Europe durant l\u2019\u00e9t\u00e9 2015), sans penser au traitement effroyable qui a \u00e9t\u00e9 r\u00e9serv\u00e9 \u00e0 certains de ces r\u00e9fugi\u00e9s dans certaines r\u00e9gions de la soi-disant Europe \u00ab\u00a0chr\u00e9tienne\u00a0\u00bb.<\/p>\n<p>Ce qui me frappe et me d\u00e9range le plus dans les d\u00e9bats anim\u00e9s sur la question des migrants et des r\u00e9fugi\u00e9s dans certains pays occidentaux, c\u2019est l\u2019hypocrisie flagrante de la rh\u00e9torique. Quasiment tous les pays occidentaux ont connu des si\u00e8cles d\u2019immigration. Si certains d\u2019entre eux, comme les \u00c9tats-Unis et l\u2019Australie, sont ce qu\u2019ils sont aujourd\u2019hui, c\u2019est essentiellement gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 l\u2019immigration, qui s\u2019est parfois faite dans des bains de sang et sous l\u2019oppression. Des secteurs entiers de l\u2019\u00e9conomie nationale du Royaume-Uni, \u00e0 diff\u00e9rents niveaux, ne pourraient pas fonctionner sans la main-d\u2019\u0153uvre \u00e9trang\u00e8re. Pourtant, dans ces pays, certaines voix politiques et leurs politiques veulent relever le pont-levis et emp\u00eacher les \u00e9trangers d\u2019entrer. Le langage utilis\u00e9 est \u00e9galement bien hypocrite. Pourquoi appelle-t-on, par exemple, les britanniques qui sont partis \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9tranger, pour la plupart en qu\u00eate de meilleures opportunit\u00e9s \u00e9conomiques, des \u00ab\u00a0expatri\u00e9s\u00a0\u00bb, ou \u00ab\u00a0expats\u00a0\u00bb, alors que tous ceux qui viennent dans notre pays avec la m\u00eame qu\u00eate, sont d\u00e9nigr\u00e9s et \u00e9tiquet\u00e9s comme \u00ab\u00a0migrants\u00a0?\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n<p>Il y a \u00e9galement de l\u2019hypocrisie dans l\u2019absence de perspective historique. Il y a cinq cents ans, les Europ\u00e9ens ont d\u00e9cid\u00e9 d\u2019\u00e9migrer. Ils se sont export\u00e9s en masse dans le monde entier, parfois pour conqu\u00e9rir, parfois pour coloniser, bien souvent les deux. Ils n\u2019ont demand\u00e9 aucune autorisation et n\u2019ont pas eu besoin de visa. Ils y sont juste all\u00e9s, ont pris ce qu\u2019ils voulaient et se sont install\u00e9s, pendant des si\u00e8cles. Et voil\u00e0 qu\u2019aujourd\u2019hui, le monde rebondit. Il est impressionnant de constater le nombre de crises survenues dans des r\u00e9gions du monde d\u00e9chir\u00e9es par la guerre qui peuvent \u00eatre retrac\u00e9es aux injustices historiques flagrantes de l\u2019expansionnisme europ\u00e9en, du colonialisme, de la traite des esclaves, du d\u00e9pe\u00e7age de l\u2019Afrique, puis du Moyen-Orient apr\u00e8s la Premi\u00e8re Guerre mondiale, et d\u2019autres exactions commise dans le monde. Il nous faut admettre que de telles r\u00e9flexions ne servent pas \u00e0 grand chose dans la recherche de solutions aux nombreux probl\u00e8mes que soul\u00e8vent l\u2019arriv\u00e9e de millions de r\u00e9fugi\u00e9s en Europe qui fuient la guerre civile d\u00e9clar\u00e9e par l\u2019\u00c9tat islamique au Moyen-Orient, mais celles-ci devraient au moins contribuer \u00e0 susciter une certaine humilit\u00e9 et \u00e0 att\u00e9nuer la sup\u00e9riorit\u00e9 morale dans notre mani\u00e8re d\u2019\u00e9voquer la question et de prier \u00e0 ce sujet.<\/p>\n<p>L\u2019universit\u00e9 doit \u00eatre l\u2019endroit o\u00f9 ce genre de perspectives historiques et morales peuvent \u00eatre discut\u00e9es et mises \u00e0 profit. Les \u00e9tudiants universitaires chr\u00e9tiens ont donc assur\u00e9ment un r\u00f4le strat\u00e9gique \u00e0 jouer en influen\u00e7ant la rh\u00e9torique et le d\u00e9bat, et faire leur possible pour \u00e9viter que ces derniers g\u00e9n\u00e8rent un racisme et une x\u00e9nophobie de caniveau, qui semblent malheureusement avoir contamin\u00e9 l\u2019opinion publique irr\u00e9fl\u00e9chie mais aussi le discours politique, cens\u00e9 devoir \u00eatre pris aux s\u00e9rieux.<\/p>\n<p>Et enfin, ma derni\u00e8re question consiste \u00e0 se demander quel pourrait \u00eatre notre regard missionnel sur la question. La Bible nous enseigne que Dieu est souverain sur les d\u00e9placements des populations, sur l\u2019ensemble de la plan\u00e8te. Les \u00e9l\u00e9ments g\u00e9ographiques dans Deut\u00e9ronome 2 l\u2019indiquent (comme le souligne Heimburger). Et il semble que lorsque les populations se d\u00e9placent, Dieu est particuli\u00e8rement actif parmi elles, mais aussi dans les endroits et les peuples o\u00f9 elles se rendent. Ainsi, posons-nous la question suivante\u00a0: en quoi et o\u00f9 voyons-nous le r\u00e8gne souverain de Dieu, le royaume de Dieu, au c\u0153ur de cette crise migratoire \u00e0 travers le monde\u00a0? Il se trouve qu\u2019un nombre impressionnant de musulmans et de musulmanes, jusqu\u2019ici non atteints et quasiment inatteignables par l\u2019\u00c9vangile, sont en train de devenir des disciples de J\u00e9sus, le Messie, gr\u00e2ce aux actes et aux paroles aimantes de personnes, familles et \u00c9glises chr\u00e9tiennes dans les pays o\u00f9 ils se sont r\u00e9fugi\u00e9s. Je le sais de plusieurs amis chr\u00e9tiens au Liban, par exemple.<\/p>\n<p>Il me faut n\u00e9anmoins pr\u00e9ciser ici que les causes de la migration forc\u00e9e sont en elles-m\u00eames mauvaises, qu\u2019il s\u2019agisse de la guerre, de la pers\u00e9cution religieuse, de la pauvret\u00e9 abjecte et insoutenable ou de la d\u00e9vastation climatique comme la s\u00e9cheresse, la famine, les inondations ou la hausse du niveau des mers. Dire que Dieu peut \u00eatre \u00e0 l\u2019\u0153uvre parmi les personnes qui sont victimes de tels maux et qu\u2019il utilise ces circonstances comme un moyen de leur apporter la b\u00e9n\u00e9diction ultime par le moyen de l\u2019\u00c9vangile ne signifie PAS que Dieu lui-m\u00eame a caus\u00e9 ces situations dans ce but, ni que ces circonstances sont en quelque sorte \u00ab\u00a0bonnes\u00a0\u00bb. Non, le mal est ce qu\u2019il est, tout comme la souffrance. Ce sont des choses mauvaises, qui ne pourront jamais \u00eatre justifi\u00e9es ou excus\u00e9es par le fait que quelque chose de bon en ressort. Elles ne nous dispensent pas non plus de d\u00e9fendre la justice et la paix et de tout faire pour aimer l\u2019\u00e9tranger. Mais les paroles que Joseph adresse \u00e0 ses fr\u00e8res semblent v\u00e9hiculer une profonde th\u00e9ologie de la providence souveraine de Dieu sur tout ce qui est mauvais, et sur la capacit\u00e9 de Dieu de faire sortir du bien des intentions mauvaises et des actes mauvais. \u00ab\u00a0Vous aviez projet\u00e9 de me faire du mal, Dieu l\u2019a chang\u00e9 en bien pour accomplir ce qui arrive aujourd\u2019hui, pour sauver la vie \u00e0 un peuple nombreux.\u00a0\u00bb (Gen. 50:20, dit avec pertinence et une pointe d\u2019ironie \u00e0 ses fr\u00e8res, qui \u00e9taient devenus des r\u00e9fugi\u00e9s fuyant la famine en \u00c9gypte, o\u00f9 Joseph s\u2019\u00e9tait retrouv\u00e9 apr\u00e8s qu\u2019ils l\u2019aient vendu comme esclave). L\u2019exemple supr\u00eame de la puissance que d\u00e9ploie Dieu pour triompher du mal par sa gr\u00e2ce et son amour souverains, et pour renverser le mal afin de le d\u00e9truire, est celui de la croix. Cela doit rester inscrit au c\u0153ur de notre r\u00e9ponse \u00e0 cette probl\u00e9matique, mais aussi \u00e0 toutes les autres. Je dirais donc qu\u2019un regard missionnel sur cette crise nous incite non seulement \u00e0 agir au nom des victimes et \u00e0 prier pour celles et ceux qui \u0153uvrent pour la paix et la justice, mais aussi \u00e0 discerner la main de Dieu dans ces circonstances et \u00e0 se montrer pr\u00eat \u00e0 saisir les opportunit\u00e9s d\u2019annoncer l\u2019\u00c9vangile qu\u2019il place sur notre chemin, par sa myst\u00e9rieuse gouvernance universelle et cach\u00e9e.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4><strong>R\u00e9pondre\u00a0:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Qu\u2019en pensez-vous\u00a0?
