Because there&nbsp;wasn\u2019t&nbsp;one.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block block-core-paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although this eastern region once had a thriving student ministry, the pandemic changed the landscape. Groups struggled to meet virtually, students graduated and moved on, and the distance from San Salvador (the&nbsp;ministry hub) limited staff worker support.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block block-core-paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over time, the&nbsp;MUC groups dried up.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block block-core-paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet today,&nbsp;Mayerlis&nbsp;and&nbsp;Sindy, a newly appointed staff worker for the&nbsp;area, are serving in this barren field \u2013 and seeing God\u2019s reviving hand.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block block-core-heading wp-elements-458632d545ceaa32120c9749dbbae5d1\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-latin-america-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-458632d545ceaa32120c9749dbbae5d1\"><strong>Fallow Ground<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block block-core-paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sindy notes that the challenge&nbsp;runs&nbsp;deeper than the&nbsp;effects of the&nbsp;pandemic \u2013 the ground&nbsp;feels&nbsp;dry&nbsp;<em>and<\/em>&nbsp;hardened.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block block-core-paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She&nbsp;finds&nbsp;that many students are apathetic towards&nbsp;talk of&nbsp;Jesus. The idea of studying the Bible together, \u201cfeels tedious or strange to them\u201d,&nbsp;especially when the&nbsp;majority\u2019s sole&nbsp;motivation for being at university is work-related. She recalls her own experience:&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block block-core-paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cAt first, I saw university simply as a place to get equipped&nbsp;for my&nbsp;future profession.&nbsp;Four years ago,&nbsp;I\u2019d&nbsp;have said<\/em><em>,<\/em><em>&nbsp;\u201cI\u2019m just&nbsp;there&nbsp;to study, to get work-ready\u201d \u2013 I never imagined God would use me in the university to share the gospel.\u201d&nbsp;<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block block-core-heading wp-elements-baea2c5e25630656171e3eb643a57769\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-latin-america-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-baea2c5e25630656171e3eb643a57769\"><strong>Ploughing the Land<\/strong>&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block block-core-paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But,&nbsp;while&nbsp;studying&nbsp;at UNIVO, Sindy attended a national MUC event,&nbsp;and&nbsp;God challenged her&nbsp;to see a&nbsp;mission&nbsp;field. On return, she invited some classmates to a Bible study group \u2013 and they came.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block block-core-paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mayerlis&nbsp;has seen a similar pattern at the University of El Salvador (UES):&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block block-core-paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cAfter the pandemic, students felt more isolated, more focused on study, unsure how to relate with others. Reviving groups has been like ploughing dry ground \u2013 we&nbsp;must&nbsp;first<\/em><em>&nbsp;<\/em><em>rebuild friendship and community.\u201d<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block block-core-heading wp-elements-b40107d30c65b2c2c6ab09948d6b7117\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-latin-america-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-b40107d30c65b2c2c6ab09948d6b7117\"><strong>Reclaiming Ground<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block block-core-paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To build bridges,&nbsp;Mayerlis&nbsp;and Sindy are finding creative ways to engage their campuses \u2013 like in February, when they offered \u201clove letters\u201d with love-filled Bible verses.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block block-core-paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Such words are desperately needed. Many students face economic pressures and struggle with anxiety and loneliness, with families often split apart by emigration.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block block-core-paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mayerlis&nbsp;follows up&nbsp;with&nbsp;all those who&nbsp;show interest, inviting them to enjoy snacks, find a safe space, and explore Scripture.&nbsp;Inductive Bible studies are&nbsp;once&nbsp;again a weekly feature of campus life.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block block-core-paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cWe\u2019re&nbsp;not simply reopening groups.&nbsp;We\u2019re&nbsp;reclaiming ground! Conversations that begin about homework and end up reflecting on God\u2019s purposes. Sitting in the middle of campus with open Bibles, with God\u2019s name spoken naturally in university spaces.&nbsp;That\u2019s&nbsp;reclaiming ground for the kingdom!\u201d<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block block-core-heading wp-elements-693338700b4aa7a49df2a691e8f2b2a4\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-latin-america-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-693338700b4aa7a49df2a691e8f2b2a4\"><strong>Pray&nbsp;<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block block-core-list\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><div class=\"wp-block block-core-list-item\">\n<li>Give thanks for Sindy and&nbsp;Mayerlis&nbsp;and the revival of groups in UNIVO and UES in eastern El Salvador. Sindy also&nbsp;supports&nbsp;a new group at another campus (UGB). Pray that these three groups will flourish and grow.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/div><\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block block-core-list\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><div class=\"wp-block block-core-list-item\">\n<li>Ask that students will respond to outreach \u2013&nbsp;to&nbsp;look beyond their studies and future career to see the God who brings purpose to it all. One student told Sindy, \u201cI\u2019m only here to finish my degree, but I feel empty\u201d.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/div><\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block block-core-list\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><div class=\"wp-block block-core-list-item\">\n<li>Thank God for the pioneering vision of MUC and a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ifesworld.org\/en\/thriving-together-grants\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Thriving Together grant<\/a>&nbsp;that\u2019s&nbsp;enabled this ministry.&nbsp;Pray for God\u2019s ongoing provision of funds to sustain it.
