{"id":50124,"date":"2026-01-06T15:27:57","date_gmt":"2026-01-06T15:27:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ifesworld.org\/?post_type=prayerline&#038;p=50124"},"modified":"2026-01-09T09:19:41","modified_gmt":"2026-01-09T09:19:41","slug":"cutting-back-thorns","status":"publish","type":"prayerline","link":"https:\/\/ifesworld.org\/en\/prayerline\/cutting-back-thorns\/","title":{"rendered":"Cutting Back Thorns"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wp-block block-core-html\">\n<iframe title=\"Cutting Back Thorns\" allowtransparency=\"true\" height=\"150\" width=\"100%\" style=\"border: none; min-width: min(100%, 430px);height:150px;\" scrolling=\"no\" data-name=\"pb-iframe-player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.podbean.com\/player-v2\/?i=jgq7c-1a12ec0-pb&#038;from=pb6admin&#038;share=1&#038;download=1&#038;rtl=0&#038;fonts=Arial&#038;skin=3267a3&#038;font-color=ffffff&#038;logo_link=episode_page&#038;btn-skin=666666\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block block-core-paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dear Friends,\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block block-core-paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Warm greetings as we start 2026 \u2013\u202fa new year with new possibilities\u202ffor growth in God\u2019s kingdom!\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block block-core-paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I recently\u202frevisited\u202fthe Parable of the\u202fSower\u202f(Luke 8:4-15)&nbsp;and\u202fhave since\u202fbeen\u202freflecting on\u202fthe different possibilities\u202ffor the seed\u202fand how\u202fthey relate to our work among students.\u202f\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block block-core-paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In many countries, it has for years&nbsp;felt&nbsp;like the seed of the gospel&nbsp;has&nbsp;often fallen\u202f\u201calong the path\u201d or \u201con rocky ground\u201d&nbsp;of&nbsp;campuses,\u202fconsequently&nbsp;snatched away or\u202ffailing to take\u202froot.\u202fBut,\u202ftoday,\u202fwe have a growing sense that the soil of this generation is more fertile.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block block-core-paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many places have been\u202fwitnessing\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/ifesworld.org\/en\/blog\/meeting-gen-z-students-worldwide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">an increase in spiritual openness\u202f- although it\u202fexists alongside deep anxieties and various pressures.<\/a>\u202fThis\u202fis why\u202fI was particularly struck by\u202fthese words from the parable:\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block block-core-paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cThe seed that fell among thorns stands for those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by life\u2019s worries, riches, and pleasures, and they do not mature.\u201d<\/em>\u202f(v.14)\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block block-core-paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Students may be responding to the gospel, but widespread worries and digital distractions can often choke their spiritual growth and prevent maturity.\u202fThat\u2019s\u202fwhy, as we start this year,\u202f<strong>I invite you to pray for the vitality of our students and national movements \u2013 that together as a fellowship we can help each other tackle the threat of those thorns.<\/strong><strong>\u202f<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block block-core-paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I&#8217;d\u202flike&nbsp;to ask&nbsp;especially&nbsp;for your prayers&nbsp;around&nbsp;two initiatives:&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block block-core-heading wp-elements-5005b40513666d54c59999e23643ceae\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-primary-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-5005b40513666d54c59999e23643ceae\"><strong>Reaching a New Generation<\/strong><strong>\u202f<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block block-core-paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over the past eighteen months,\u202fwe\u2019ve\u202fintentionally listened to our movements&nbsp;and&nbsp;what\u202fthey\u2019re\u202fsaying about the culture shift among the new generation of students (Gen Z).\u202fThis has led\u202fus\u202fto\u202flaunch\u202fa dedicated\u202f<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ifesworld.org\/gen-z\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Gen Z\u202fweb page<\/a>\u202fthat\u202fhosts various\u202freflections and\u202fresources, including the recently published\u202f<em>Gen Z Insights\u202f<\/em>report.\u202f\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block block-core-paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the coming months, we hope that\u202fthe\u202fmaterial\u202fthere\u202fwill\u202fspark\u202fhonest conversations\u202fand prayerful reflection across the fellowship. And\u202fwe\u2019re\u202falso looking forward to the findings of\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/ifesworld.org\/en\/blog\/reaching-gen-z\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a Task Force that\u2019s explored how to support staff workers who are discipling the new generation<\/a>.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block block-core-paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Let\u2019s\u202fgive thanks for this growing suite of resources from across the&nbsp;fellowship. Pray that it will help movements faithfully reimagine student ministry among a generation\u202fthat\u2019s\u202fspiritually open yet often overwhelmed. Pray that shared conversations and ministry collaborations will enable each movement to thrive in this new climate.<\/strong><strong>\u202f<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block block-core-heading wp-elements-2a1a8b892446797ffd3d9b93003238f6\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-primary-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-2a1a8b892446797ffd3d9b93003238f6\"><strong>Supporting Radiant Witness<\/strong><strong>\u202f<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block block-core-paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As we reflected\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/ifesworld.org\/en\/blog\/hows-the-family\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">on our movements\u2019 responses to\u202flast year\u2019s ministry survey<\/a>, I was curious to see&nbsp;<em>whole-life witness<\/em>\u202femerge\u202fas an area that could be strengthened. Enabling students to relate the gospel to \u201clife\u2019s worries, riches, and pleasures\u201d is surely essential if\u202fwe\u2019re\u202fto avoid maturity in Christ being choked.\u202fWhat\u2019s\u202fmore, the formation of disciples who shine in every area of life will be a powerful witness among Gen Z, with its longing for\u202fwhat\u2019s\u202f\u201creal\u201d and \u201cauthentic\u201d.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block block-core-paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s\u202fwhy\u202fI\u2019m\u202fdelighted that the theme for Global Giving Day 2026 is\u202f<em>Radiant<\/em>, reflecting Jesus\u2019 call to \u201clet our light shine\u201d (Matthew 5:16).\u202fAs students, staff, churches, and supporters\u202funite\u202fagain\u202fin generosity,\u202fthey\u2019ll\u202ffund ministry\u202fthat\u202fforms\u202fdisciples who\u202flive out\u202fa brighter vision for life.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block block-core-paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Give thanks for growing participation in\u202f<\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ifesworld.org\/ggd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>IFES Global Giving Day<\/strong><\/a><strong>. Please pray that this year\u2019s theme will strike a chord&nbsp;that&nbsp;resonates with many. Ask&nbsp;that the Lord will use it to\u202fsubstantially<\/strong><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>boost\u202finitiatives\u202fthat\u202fare\u202fcultivating whole-life\u202fwitness<\/strong><strong>.\u202f<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block block-core-heading wp-elements-311658cfa15e1b38547d2ee3baee4a75\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-primary-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-311658cfa15e1b38547d2ee3baee4a75\"><strong>Hope of Growth<\/strong><strong>\u202f<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block block-core-paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Overall, I find the Parable of the Sower helpfully realistic and hopeful\u202fas we head into 2026.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block block-core-paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Through students, we\u202fwill sow the Word\u202ffar and wide\u202facross campuses \u2013 that is our calling. Sadly, some\u202fseeds\u202fwon\u2019t\u202ftake root or will wither. Some may be choked. But, by God\u2019s grace, there is another possibility:\u202fthose \u201cwho hear the word, retain it, and by persevering produce a crop\u201d (v.15). God is faithful \u2013 by his grace, fruitfulness is\u202fan option!\u202f\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block block-core-paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So,\u202flet\u2019s\u202fbe hopeful.
