At this conference, we\u2019ll learn together how to navigate storms with unshakeable faith, a heart that does not yield, and a hope that does not fade.\u201d<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block block-core-paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So said the invitation to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eus.rs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">EUS Serbia\u2019s<\/a> annual conference. Last month, students gathered for a time of renewal after an exceptionally tough year. Since the deadly collapse of a concrete canopy at Novi Sad railway station in November 2024, the country has witnessed student-led protests against corruption as well as violent threats and crackdowns on demonstrators by government forces.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block block-core-paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What has it looked like to live for Jesus on campus amid this struggle?&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block block-core-heading wp-elements-e57e6aa68541e957e0c9ab70f1ba1826\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-europe-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-e57e6aa68541e957e0c9ab70f1ba1826\"><strong>Speaking Hope<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block block-core-paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe planned an Events Week in March because many students were tired and fearful after weeks of blockades and strikes,\u201d says Kristina Te\u0161i\u0107, a student leader in the EUS group in Belgrade. They sensed it was a key moment to engage with peers who were questioning and searching.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block block-core-paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The team organised talks around the theme of \u201cThe Dilemma of Hope: Can We Fix the World?\u201d.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block block-core-paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cWe wanted to show the relevance of the gospel to what students were going through. We supported the demands for justice \u2013 we also took part in standing for what<\/em><em>\u2019<\/em><em>s right. But we needed to proclaim that<\/em><em> <\/em><em>man will always disappoint in the end, that hope shouldn\u2019t be found in a new government<\/em><em> <\/em><em>but in Christ.\u201d<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block block-core-heading wp-elements-9a9d1a67db535484c8acfb4256102b7e\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-europe-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-9a9d1a67db535484c8acfb4256102b7e\"><strong>Seeking Justice<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block block-core-paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That week in March turned out to be the high point of the protests, with hundreds of thousands flooding the streets. Throughout, the EUS group offered refreshments and blankets to protestors and the office remained open for students to keep up with classes while campus was closed. Kristina explains:&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block block-core-paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201c<\/em><em>We served coffee. We played games. We offered friendship and support. It was a very practical way of showing that God was present<\/em><em>, <\/em><em>right there in the middle of<\/em><em> <\/em><em>it all<\/em><em>.\u201d<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block block-core-paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nonviolent activism had not been widespread among churches, but Kristina says that student involvement has helped them rethink social responsibility. High schoolers are especially invested \u2013 \u201cthey&#8217;re longing to be salt and light for Jesus.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block block-core-paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In April, EUS ran a panel discussion to promote faithful engagement \u2013 \u201cBiblical Obedience and Civic Activism: Where is the Line?\u201d \u2013 with an American pastor and Christian activist and a local research fellow at the Institute for Balkan Studies.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block block-core-heading wp-elements-3573ae7b27d211114a1f864d5a2b10de\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-europe-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-3573ae7b27d211114a1f864d5a2b10de\"><strong>Holding On<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block block-core-paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">University classes have now resumed. In September, some public figures were held accountable for the Novi Sad canopy collapse, and last month\u2019s anniversary vigil passed peacefully. Nevertheless, demands for full justice and accountability remain \u2013 the storm rumbles on.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block block-core-paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So it was that Kristina stood before 120 students at the recent conference and shared how faith had helped her find peace through these turbulent times.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block block-core-heading wp-elements-5af798880badd27acc5f2f8f9dab7654\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-europe-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-5af798880badd27acc5f2f8f9dab7654\"><strong>Pray<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block block-core-list\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><div class=\"wp-block block-core-list-item\">\n<li>Praise God that EUS students have shared the gospel, showed love, and stood for justice over the last year. Give thanks for the recent conference and ask that students will have \u201cunshakeable faith, unyielding hearts, and unfading hope\u201d. Pray for lasting peace.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/div><\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block block-core-list\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><div class=\"wp-block block-core-list-item\">\n<li>Give thanks that many new students have shown interest.
