Thankfully the police station was air conditioned.&nbsp;I glanced&nbsp;around the room,&nbsp;palms sweating.&nbsp;Two officers came in.&nbsp;<em>Lord,&nbsp;help me!&nbsp;Give me the&nbsp;right&nbsp;words.<\/em>&nbsp;An unmistakable&nbsp;peace settled in my heart.&nbsp;<em>I am here<\/em>, I felt God say.&nbsp;<em>This is&nbsp;between&nbsp;My hands<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block block-core-paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We were&nbsp;ready.&nbsp;One of the officers&nbsp;opened up&nbsp;his notebook&nbsp;and looked&nbsp;over&nbsp;at me:&nbsp; <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block block-core-quote\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cAre you still a Christian?\u201d&nbsp; <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block block-core-paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And&nbsp;so&nbsp;the questioning began\u2026&nbsp; <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block block-core-paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Abdullah*<\/strong><strong>&nbsp;works with the IFES movement in&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>a&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>Muslim&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>country in North Africa<\/strong><strong>.&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>He<\/strong><strong>&nbsp;converted from Islam<\/strong><strong>&nbsp;to Christianity&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>himself&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>as a student,&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>and<\/strong><strong>&nbsp;now spends his days<\/strong><strong>&nbsp;telling students about the hope he found in Jesus.<\/strong><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>The ground is hard.<\/strong><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>Students who convert<\/strong><strong>&nbsp;to Christianity&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>are considered traitors to their country<\/strong><strong>. They<\/strong><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>can expect to&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>face&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>severe&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>opposition from family<\/strong><strong>. S<\/strong><strong>ome<\/strong><strong>&nbsp;might lose their place at university<\/strong><strong>;<\/strong><strong>&nbsp;some might be physically abused.<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block block-core-paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Student ministry in this context is an uphill struggle.&nbsp;Last year,&nbsp;it&nbsp;got even harder for&nbsp;Abdullah&nbsp;when he&nbsp;was&nbsp;called in for questioning by the police. He shared his&nbsp;story&nbsp;of life on the frontline.<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block block-core-heading\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Under pressure&nbsp; <\/h3>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block block-core-paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Yes<\/em><em>.<\/em><em>&nbsp;I\u2019m still a Christian<\/em><em>.&nbsp;<\/em>I tried to answer calmly, confidently.&nbsp;<em>I plan to be one for my entire life.<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block block-core-paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The police officers were surprisingly friendly, but they had a job to do.&nbsp;The&nbsp;interrogation&nbsp;continued for three hours.&nbsp;They wanted to know about my church,&nbsp;my activities, my wife&nbsp;\u2013 names, addresses, dates, details.&nbsp;That&nbsp;was the first of four visits to the authorities.&nbsp;Always the same questions.&nbsp;On the last&nbsp;occasion&nbsp;I spoke with the Chief Police Officer. He told me to repent and go back to Islam.&nbsp;<em>You<\/em><em>&nbsp;don\u2019t have a place in this country as<\/em><em>&nbsp;a Christian<\/em>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block block-core-paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They came to search my house as well. They went through my belongings. They wrote down the names of the Christian books and tracts I had on my shelves. They confiscated my passport for several months. I missed important IFES meetings. When I was finally allowed to go to the passport office to get it back, I had to queue up alongside men who had been involved in terrorist activities.&nbsp;<em>They consider me a traitor too<\/em>, I thought.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block block-core-heading\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Wrestling within&nbsp;<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block block-core-paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was a difficult season. One of the hardest things was seeing the impact it had on the Christian students I knew. They were afraid the same thing would happen to them. Some wanted to have less contact with me. It was painful. Yes, I trusted God. And I wanted to rejoice in my suffering. But I also struggled. My wife struggled too. We had an opportunity to leave and move to a much more open country. But we decided to stay. I didn\u2019t want to leave this baby ministry. I wanted to see it grow. I wanted to stay and see people take the steering wheel after me. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/ifesworld.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/190807-emanuela-boros-klOQVJyKsYg-unsplash-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7642\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ifesworld.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/190807-emanuela-boros-klOQVJyKsYg-unsplash-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/ifesworld.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/190807-emanuela-boros-klOQVJyKsYg-unsplash-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ifesworld.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/190807-emanuela-boros-klOQVJyKsYg-unsplash-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ifesworld.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/190807-emanuela-boros-klOQVJyKsYg-unsplash.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"acknowledgement caption\"><i class=\"caption__icon icon-container icon-container--md\">  <svg class=\"icon camera\"><use xlink:href=\"#camera-solid\"><\/use><\/svg><\/i><span class=\"caption__text\"><\/i>Emanuela Boros - Unsplash<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block block-core-heading\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Commitment&nbsp;or&nbsp;compromise&nbsp; <\/h3>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block block-core-paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We see a lot of students drift away.&nbsp;They feel the&nbsp;sting&nbsp;of persecution&nbsp;or sacrifice&nbsp;and&nbsp;wonder if it\u2019s&nbsp;all&nbsp;worth it.&nbsp;Day in day out, they\u2019re surrounded by strong&nbsp;Islamic&nbsp;\u2013 and&nbsp;now&nbsp;also secular&nbsp;\u2013&nbsp;influences&nbsp;at university.&nbsp;Many&nbsp;young believers&nbsp;are&nbsp;already&nbsp;involved in political or religious movements&nbsp;when they&nbsp;hear about Christ; many are in relationships with Muslim boyfriends or girlfriends.&nbsp;It feels like a lot to give up.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block block-core-paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Suppose we have contact with seven professing Christians in a year: three will be committed; four will stay on the fringe, pursuing the path of compromise.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block block-core-heading\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Fellowship-starved&nbsp; <\/h3>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block block-core-paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another huge challenge is that even after a student has professed faith in Christ, they are reluctant to commit to a church family \u2013 and even fewer want to be involved in a student fellowship group. They come from a Muslim background where there is no obligation to attend one&nbsp;particular mosque&nbsp;consistently. On Fridays, a Muslim may go along to any mosque they choose.&nbsp;So&nbsp;in young believers you often see a casual attitude towards fellowship. It\u2019s a two-stage process: first they must be convinced to join the Christian faith; then they must be convinced to join a Christian community.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block block-core-paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Discipling these young people is challenging, particularly for those who are geographically isolated.&nbsp;There might not be a single church in their region, or any other Christians on&nbsp;their campus.&nbsp;For some, there&nbsp;might be&nbsp;one&nbsp;or&nbsp;two&nbsp;other believers at their university&nbsp;\u2013&nbsp;often&nbsp;international students \u2013 and&nbsp;we try to link them up.&nbsp;Fellowship&nbsp;is&nbsp;a&nbsp;challenge&nbsp;because they&nbsp;speak a different language,&nbsp;but&nbsp;it\u2019s better&nbsp;than&nbsp;nothing.&nbsp;I travel to meet them when I can, but&nbsp;it\u2019s not easy to reach those who are&nbsp;200&nbsp;or 300km away.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block block-core-heading\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Slow, but steady&nbsp;<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block block-core-paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I\u2019ve been involved in student ministry for several years now. I&nbsp;never&nbsp;expected&nbsp;big things \u2013 but I didn\u2019t think it would be&nbsp;this&nbsp;hard.&nbsp;And yet,&nbsp;in the midst of&nbsp;the&nbsp;uphill struggle,&nbsp;there is grace.&nbsp;I&nbsp;see God&nbsp;at&nbsp;work.&nbsp;I remember He says,&nbsp;<em>t<\/em><em>his is&nbsp;<\/em><em>between<\/em><em>&nbsp;My hands.<\/em>&nbsp;Growth&nbsp;is slow, but steady. Each year,&nbsp;a few&nbsp;students&nbsp;turn&nbsp;to Christ.&nbsp;That keeps me going.&nbsp;Some&nbsp;who profess faith&nbsp;drift away, but some hold on.&nbsp;It\u2019s deeply encouraging&nbsp;when you&nbsp;see Christian graduates go on to serve in their churches or other ministries.&nbsp;<em>It was<\/em><em>&nbsp;<\/em><em>a blessing to be part of the student&nbsp;<\/em><em>ministry<\/em><em>,&nbsp;<\/em>they say.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block block-core-paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So&nbsp;we&nbsp;press on,&nbsp;sowing seeds, praying&nbsp;each day:&nbsp;<em>God, make workers<\/em><em>&nbsp;for this huge harvest field.<\/em>&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block block-core-paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">* name changed&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"featured_media":7640,"template":"","area":[461],"theme":[1213],"class_list":["post-7641","conexion","type-conexion","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","area-mena","theme-muslim-ministry"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.2 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/product\/yoast-seo-wordpress\/ -->\n<title>Life on the frontline &#183; IFES Conexi\u00f3n Blog<\/title>\n<meta name=\"description\" content=\"It was a hot day. 36\u00b0 maybe.
