Sunset<\/span>\u00a0in the city of Yangon.\u00a0<\/span>A student<\/span>\u00a0gets off the crowded bus, weary after<\/span>\u00a0a day\u2019s study<\/span>\u00a0at university<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>As always, it<\/span>\u00a0was a\u00a0<\/span>long journey <\/span>back<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>She<\/span>\u00a0walk<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0home<\/span>\u00a0from the bus stop\u00a0<\/span>past<\/span>\u00a0t<\/span>he crumbling colonial buildings and golden pagodas<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>lit up by the evening sun. Men meet in smoke-filled tea shops to chat about their days and their lives.\u00a0<\/span>Buddhist m<\/span>onks in long orange robes walk the streets.\u00a0<\/span>People<\/span>\u00a0with cream-smeared faces wander through the markets in search of colourful fabrics or food for the evening meal.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

These are the streets of<\/span>\u00a0\u201cThe Golden Land\u201d, otherwise known as Myanmar<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>This student<\/span>\u00a0is one of\u00a0<\/span>around<\/span>\u00a0600,000<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>young people studying at university<\/span>\u00a0there<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>As she walks among the\u00a0<\/span>ancient\u00a0<\/span>pagodas,\u00a0<\/span>phone in hand,\u00a0<\/span>she<\/span>\u00a0look<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0the same as\u00a0<\/span>everyone else<\/span>. But\u00a0<\/span>she\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0not.\u00a0<\/span>She\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>a Christian<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Living in the minority<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

The<\/span>\u00a0MFES movement\u00a0<\/span>is<\/span>\u00a0a lifeline<\/span>\u00a0for the few Christian students in Myanmar<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>It\u2019s not easy\u00a0<\/span>living in the minority<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u201cWe have hardly any Christian friends at university\u201d, one shares. \u201cWhen they realise I don\u2019t join in with their religious festivities, they look down on me\u201d, says another.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Aside from the feelings of isolation, these students<\/span>\u00a0also<\/span>\u00a0face practical challenges in finding<\/span>\u00a0a place and a time to\u00a0<\/span>meet together<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Though the country is\u00a0<\/span>becoming more open<\/span>, there is still a wariness\u00a0<\/span>towards<\/span>\u00a0students in general, and\u00a0<\/span>towards<\/span>\u00a0Christian\u00a0<\/span>students in particular<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>Universities in Myanmar\u00a0<\/span>were<\/span>\u00a0at the centre of\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>civil unrest throughout the last century. Student protests often ended in bloodshed. For most of the 1990s, universities were completely closed.\u00a0<\/span>M<\/span>ilitary leaders saw university students as a threat to their authority<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>and<\/span>\u00a0national stability<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>Urban<\/span>\u00a0universities\u00a0<\/span>have\u00a0<\/span>since\u00a0<\/span>been<\/span>\u00a0rebuilt<\/span>\u00a0\u2013 but<\/span>\u00a0outside the city centres<\/span>\u00a0where\u00a0<\/span>t<\/span>here\u00a0<\/span>is no\u00a0<\/span>accommodation<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>S<\/span>o<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>students\u00a0<\/span>must<\/span>\u00a0travel long distance<\/span>s each day<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>on poorly functioning transport.<\/span>\u00a0It takes up\u00a0<\/span>a\u00a0<\/span>huge amount of time.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

On top of that, many students take extra tuition classes outside of university hours\u00a0<\/span>with the hope of finding a better job in the future<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>or having<\/span>\u00a0the chance to study abroad.\u00a0<\/span>There\u2019s little<\/span>\u00a0time\u00a0<\/span>for meeting with other believers<\/span>. If it\u2019s not a problem of finding time, it\u2019s a problem of finding a place to meet.\u00a0<\/span>Government restrictions<\/span>\u00a0mean that\u00a0<\/span>MFES<\/span>\u00a0groups are not allowed to meet on campus.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A peace she didn\u2019t have<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

But despite these challenges, the\u00a0<\/span>IFES movement in<\/span>\u00a0Myanmar is growing. For a long time, student work seemed impossible. But four years ago, MFES was started and today there are around 120 students involved in the ministry.\u00a0<\/span>Each week there are<\/span>\u00a0Bible studies (many led by students), prayer meetings, times of discipleship and outreach through language lessons. One student shared:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe study the gospel carefully so that it might spread. We learn about how to form our own Bible study discussion groups. As we study the Bible in MFES, it is bearing lots of fruit.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

It is exciting to hear of students turning to Christ. But those who do so inevitably face huge challenges.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Maiah<\/span>* is a third-year student from a Buddhist background. She had\u00a0<\/span>noticed<\/span>\u00a0a difference in the lives of her Christian friends. They had a peace she didn\u2019t have. That\u2019s why she started to\u00a0<\/span>look into<\/span>\u00a0the\u00a0<\/span>Christian faith<\/span>. Recently she decided she wanted to follow Christ. Since then she\u2019s been actively involved in a<\/span>n MFES<\/span> Bible study group on campus. But <\/span>Maiah<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>hasn\u2019t yet told her family. When they find out they are likely to punish her severely or\u00a0<\/span>even force her to leave<\/span>\u00a0the family.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0<\/span>internet\u00a0<\/span>invasion\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

Students like\u00a0<\/span>Maiah<\/span>\u00a0desperately need support and encouragement from other Christians<\/span>\u00a0if they are to stand firm and speak gospel hope into their society.\u00a0<\/span>T<\/span>hey<\/span>\u00a0need wisdom<\/span>\u00a0to live as Christ\u2019s ambassadors\u00a0<\/span>on campus,\u00a0<\/span>in a country that has seen unprecedented change o<\/span>ver the last decade<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Alongside the monks and monasteries is a new generation \u2013 a generation shaped as much by their mobile phones as by the traditional Buddhist culture. This is a nation in a time of rapid transition,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>coming face to face with a global world.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Myanmar<\/span>\u00a0has gone from having very little connection with the global world to full exposure to it.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Just\u00a0<\/span>five<\/span>\u00a0years ago<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>a sim card cost around $200. Today they are just $1.50. More than 90% of the country has access to a phone with internet connection. 60% use Facebook.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Though there are obvious benefits to being online, t<\/span>he invasion\u00a0<\/span>of the internet\u00a0<\/span>has\u00a0<\/span>exposed\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>people to\u00a0<\/span>a\u00a0<\/span>host of\u00a0<\/span>seriously\u00a0<\/span>damaging<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>social problems<\/span>\u00a0like<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>pornography<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>social media obsession<\/span>\u00a0and discontentment.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Change and continuity in national identity<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

The internet has\u00a0<\/span>influenced<\/span>\u00a0t<\/span>he expectations of students.\u00a0<\/span>They\u00a0<\/span>have much bigger dreams for their lives<\/span>\u00a0than they used to<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>Young people<\/span>\u00a0are on the move, from villages to cities in search of better employment opportunities.\u00a0<\/span>There is a growing cultural gap between the older and younger generations. Older people in the villages are struggling to know how to help the\u00a0<\/span>young people<\/span>\u00a0with drug abuse, unhealthy internet habits and unwise relationships.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But\u00a0<\/span>one<\/span>\u00a0aspect of national identity that has not\u00a0<\/span>yet\u00a0<\/span>changed<\/span>\u00a0significantly<\/span>\u00a0is religious adherence. There are certain ethnic groups in Myanmar with higher proportions of Christians \u2013 the Karen, the Chin\u00a0<\/span>and\u00a0<\/span>the Kachin, for example. They make up<\/span>\u00a0the\u00a0<\/span>vast majority<\/span>\u00a0of<\/span>\u00a0the 2.5 million Christians in the country. But the predominant people group is the\u00a0<\/span>Bamar<\/span>, numbering around 30 million. They are devout Buddhists. Only 0.1% follow Jesus. For them, ethnicity and religion are inseparable: to be\u00a0<\/span>Bamar<\/span>\u00a0is to be Buddhist.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A better hope<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

Christian students\u00a0<\/span>in Myanmar\u00a0<\/span>need to speak into this changing world, holding out a better hope.\u00a0<\/span>They need to\u00a0<\/span>show that allegiance to Jesus\u00a0<\/span>transcends<\/span>\u00a0ethnic identity.\u00a0<\/span>That\u00a0<\/span>new life with Jesus is better than a new life abroad<\/span>\u00a0or a higher-paid job<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>That\u00a0<\/span>the internet can be used\u00a0<\/span>in a way that honours God and enhances relationships<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>That bridges between generations and ethnic groups can be built.\u00a0<\/span>This is a high calling for a young movement in a\u00a0<\/span>sensitive<\/span>\u00a0context.\u00a0<\/span>One MFES staff worker\u00a0<\/span>asked us to pray for them<\/span>:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>Please pray that God would use this ministry for Myanmar to know Him<\/span>. Pray<\/span>\u00a0that God would use these young people\u00a0<\/span>living<\/span>\u00a0by the word of God<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>in all the places they live<\/span>. Pray that\u00a0<\/span>they would\u00a0<\/span>be<\/span>\u00a0people who hold fast to the gospel.<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
