Anya* studies economics and national\nsecurity at a university in Central Asia. She doesn\u2019t know any other Christians\non campus. This is her story.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n

God loves me?! <\/em>I\u2019d never heard that\nsentence before. I was talking to my uncle, not long after I\u2019d started at\nuniversity. He and his family lived nearby. Their character and lifestyle\nattracted me deeply. I couldn\u2019t help wanting what they had. They took me to their\nchurch one day where I saw a huge number of local Christians, worshipping God.\nI couldn\u2019t believe it! I\u2019d thought Christianity was a western religion, but\nhere was a church full of local<\/em>\nbelievers. If people from my country could follow Jesus, maybe I could too. Soon\nafter that I made the decision.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n

I was so happy.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n

Growing up in God<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n\n
\n

One\nof the girls from church invited me to join her IFES group, at another\nuniversity, and I\u2019ve been going ever since. This group has really helped me to\ngrow up in God. It\u2019s a place of peace and laughter. After three months, I\nbecame a student leader. This last year we\u2019ve been reading 1 Kings. I\u2019ve loved\nlearning about David and Samuel. Now I know how to read the Old Testament.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n

It\u2019s\ngreat to have their support because I don\u2019t know any other Christians on campus.\nSometimes I feel very alone. I try to love my friends, but they don\u2019t\nunderstand what I believe. They ask me why\nare you always so lucky in life? <\/em>I tell them I\u2019m not lucky, I\u2019m blessed. I\ntell them that God is with them and they can talk to him too. But they don\u2019t\nunderstand.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n

It\u2019s\na difficult place to be a Christian. At my university, corruption is a big\nproblem. Almost everyone pays bribes to get good exam results. I don\u2019t like\nthat, but when I\u2019m feeling down I remember that the IFES movement in Japan\nstarted with just two students praying for their university. I know God is with\nme too and prayer is powerful.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n

\n

I\nhope to start a fellowship group on my campus this year. But it\u2019s quite\ndangerous. If the authorities find out, there\u2019ll be some trouble. We also want\nto start student ministry in three new cities, and develop graduate ministry\nand international student ministry. So we need to pray for more staff and more\nstudent leaders, and pray that God would show us which hearts are open.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n

Changes and fears<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n\n
\n

Before\nI became a Christian, I wanted to leave my country and go to Europe or America\nwhere life is easier. But God has changed my mind. I know God has plans for me\nand has placed me here for a reason. I used to be very angry with my father for\nnot treating me well as a child. But God has changed that in me too and has\ntaught me to love him.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n

My\nfamily still don\u2019t know I\u2019m a Christian. I need to tell them. Even if they\ndon\u2019t want me to be their daughter anymore or even if I am in danger, I need to\ntell them. I have felt scared when my family visit me at university \u2013 what if\nthey find my Bible? But now I am more scared about their future \u2013 what if they\ndon\u2019t find Jesus? I need to tell them. But I don\u2019t know how.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n
