Daniel Bourdanné to step down in 2019
Dr Daniel Bourdanné has this week announced plans to move on from his role as IFES General Secretary after more than ten years leading IFES internationally.
Bourdanné shared his decision with staff and with the IFES-affiliated student ministries in 148 countries, confirming that he will not continue beyond the next IFES World Assembly, to be held in South Africa in July 2019.
“Over the past months, I have clearly sensed that the Lord is calling me to move on… When God called me to the role of IFES General Secretary in 2006, I was clear he was inviting me to join him on this journey with IFES for a season. As a family, my wife Halymah, my children and I have talked and prayed together about when I should step down as General Secretary. IFES is such a significant part of our life. We do not know what is next for us, but we share a sense of hope that God will call us to join him on a new journey.”
Daniel, originally from Chad, became General Secretary in 2007 after serving IFES in Francophone Africa for 17 years, firstly as Travelling Secretary in West Africa, then as Literature Secretary, before becoming Regional Secretary in 1995 and taking responsibility to oversee student ministry in 20 countries across the region.
“For now, my focus remains on serving IFES as General Secretary and supporting the Board as IFES finds a man or woman called by God to take on this role for the next season. With humility I can say I believe IFES is in a good place. Our ministry is about God, not about particular individuals and people in leadership. Our role continues to be one of discernment: it is seeing where God is going ahead of us. He is inviting us to join him in the work he is already doing in the university.”
The IFES Board will appoint a search committee to take forward the process of listening to the Fellowship, discerning God’s leading and, we trust, appoint the next IFES General Secretary.
Chris Collins, IFES Chair, writes: “Daniel has provided this early signal of the end of his service in 2019 to allow for an appropriate recruitment process and to ensure a strong and effective transition is able to take place.
“Daniel and I share this news with you thankful to God for his ongoing guidance. We stand together in hope and invite you, as the family of IFES, to come together in prayer as we seek where God is leading us. Let us pray that the Holy Spirit will help us see clearly and discern God’s direction for our movement.”
Please join us in giving thanks to God for Daniel’s leadership and the sacrificial support of his family, and in praying for God to give the search committee wisdom as they start the process of appointing the next General Secretary for IFES.
