Students Reaching Students with the Gospel

In Eurasia, gospel hope is desperately needed. This extensive region, long oppressed by despotic rule and with no tradition of an open bible, now suffers from alcoholism, violence, abuse and family breakdown. In this context, Christians will play key roles in breaking cycles of brokenness and despair.

Tajikistan is a mountainous, landlocked country in central Asia. Until the twentieth century there were no known Christians in the area. Now the Holy Spirit seems to be at work, and many believe that this is God's time for spiritual breakthrough in Tajikistan. A number of Tajiks have heard the gospel and believe, but fearing their families’ and communities' reactions they don’t acknowledge their decision to follow Christ. This greatly hampers the growth of the church and of those individual Christians who are ruled by fear rather than faith and perfect love.

Some Christians are focusing on building relationships with individual students and understanding their context and beliefs.  One person is taking time to read the bible alongside the Koran with students. This helps her to learn about their worldview and understanding of God. As relationships develop, she will look for opportunities to be able to talk about the misconceptions about Jesus that some Muslims have, and she trusts that God’s spirit opens people’s eyes to the truth.

About you:

A Christian we know there says she is encouraged by Isaiah 43:19 as she prays for spiritual breakthrough in Tajikistan: ‘For I am about to do a brand new thing. See, I have already begun! Do you not see it? I will make a pathway through the wilderness for my people to come home. I will create rivers for them in the desert!’

Before going to Tajikistan, this person was in another country in Central Asia. She saw how student ministry grew there; she was a witness to some students when they were not Christians, and saw them first become believers then follow on in their commitment to God. These things encourage her to keep working so that students may move from not knowing God to loving God and giving their lives to him.

Please pray:

  • for Christian students in this difficult situation;
  • for Christians to not be ruled by fear.
